C.S. Lewis, played by Anthony Hopkins, is a well known and highly respected writer, scholar and instructor. Lewis' life feels fulfilled with his community of peers and continuous pursuit of higher education. That is until he meets Joy, wonderfully plated by Debra Winger, a free spirited woman with whom he begins to fall for after some time. Lewis also starts to quickly see what he has been missing in his life and now his priorities have changed. His life is then turned completely upside down as he begins to feel powerful emotions that he is not familiar with. Hopkins and Winger have magical on screen chemistry and interact naturally and very well with one another. This is an excellent drama from the early 90s.
Directed by the steady hand of Richard Attenborough, the love story unfolds into a whirlwind drama in which Lewis' once safe emotional thoughts and feelings no longer apply and the powerful love he never even entertained governs his path. En excellent drama with a great period and British feel. This film is a must own for Hopkins, Winger and love story fans. Winger and Hopkins are simply amazing in this film. Shadowlands 1993 DVD is an excellent drama that holds up well some 20 years later. Shadowlands DVD is a terrific drama with a solid script, direction, lead performances, cinematography and set design.
